Type: about:config in the address bar and hit Enter. If the “This might void your warranty message comes up, click that you’ll be careful.
Next type: anim in the search box to find image.animation_mode. Double-click on image.animation_mode and type in none and click OK. Or, type one if you want the GIFs to play them once).
Disable Animated GIFs Google Chrome
Chrome is a bit different, so your best results are to use an extension. There are plenty to choose from, and each one varies a bit. Here are a few different ones you can choose from:
Animation Policy: This will run animations only once or disable them altogether. Note: Since a lot of GIFs are Flash-based, you can also stop them by disabling Adobe Flash completely by using guides:

Just remember if you use the options above, it will turn off Flash completely. So, videos and other Flash items won’t play. You can turn it back on, just reverse the steps in Firefox or use one of the extensions for Chrome, you can control them as described in the article. Maybe Animation Policy? There are a bunch of these types of extensions in the Chrome store. Is there a way to preemptively turn off flash ads? I adore YouTube but I really dislike them on other websites.
